Long-tem diplomacy - anyone up for it?
« on: March 10, 2010, 03:07:01 PM »
Michael (Mumjum) and I were discussing yesterday the idea of playing a long-term game of Diplomacy. Diplomacy is played by working out your moves in advance and than writing them down. Once everyone's moves are submitted, they are all executed simultaneously.

The way we were thinking of handling this would be something along the lines of:
Submit your orders by midnight Monday and they will be executed by midnight Tuesday. You than have 6 days to plot and scheme for the next set of moves.

We need 7 players to play (or 5 + Michael and I) to play. The board we be kept in the case at AG, and the execution of orders would be over seen by either Will or DJ. We'd start on a week-long rotation and adjust as necessary. Additionally, we'd have some kind of allowance for something like if you needed to go out of town, we could suspend for a week.

Would anyone else be interested in doing this with us?

Post in this thread or let Michael or I know.

It don't matter who's in Austin. Bob Wills is still the king.

Here's another link that you might like, a PDF of the Rules.

If you are a fan of Risk or Axis & Allies, but don't like how a round of poor dice rolling can ruin your plans, then you will enjoy this game.

And for anyone clicking on the link to boardgamegeeks.com, I have a copy of the 1999 version; where the units are metal cannons and battleships and not wooden blocks.

Interesting.  You could just do it online?  Wouldn't that be simpler? I'm actually playing a 5 hour timed game this weekend

I've played Diplomacy on line and it's a great website to use when you want to play the game with friends who live in different cities/states/countries.

But the game loses something when you can only communicate to the players via e-mails and there's no physical evidence to show the world that you pulled off a brillant back-stabbing.

What we would want to do is have seven people show up at Asgard and play until someone is victorious.  But it's not practical; trying to arrange all those schedules and last minute changes is frustrating.  But by lengthening the turns out, having the game at the store but also using the forums as a way of delivering orders/ploting and scheming/keeping track of the game, it allows more people the chance to play.   It's much easier to spend a few hours each week either in the store or on the forums and play the game to it's fullest.

And by having the game in the store, we will have something we can study/show off and hopefully generate more interest in this great game for others at the store.

Good question, I hope I explained it well.

Have fun this weekend!

Hey Guys, I'm gonna take some time to read over the rules this weekend and will post back any questions.

It sounds interesting to me and I'm definitely a fan of the other two games and have considered having on-going versions of those games with a neutral/safe zone for the board.  In my boyhood, I always hated it when you'd get pretty far into one of those games and then someone would have to jet for one reason or another.
