What sealant do you use?
« on: March 06, 2010, 05:24:01 PM »
I am finishing up the first incursion into Warmachine, and with only one unit left to paint, my thoughts have turned to sealers.  I have some Testors Dull Coat, but I think it is close to 20+ years old, and while it still sprays, it gave my Black 13th and Stryker a very undull shine.  So I need a new spray.  I have gone to both Micheals and Hobby Lobby, and even looked at Wally world to see if they had anything, but most of what I am finding are gloss, and a poor selection of anything else.  I have had issues with other matte sprays that I used giving a shiney coat also.  What are other people using to seal their figs, and how have they turned out?

Thanks

I am personally a really big fan of the Army Painter dull coat. I have had no problems with it and it goes on smooth with no fuzzyness. Also, the brush on reaper stuff is excelent ++.

Cheers!

Ditto on the Army Painter Dull. It saved my Wave Serpent.

For my sealer, I just use Plaid "Patricia Nimocks" Clear Acrylic Sealer in matte finish. Can be got at most any crafts store (I live right down the street from a Michael's) for relatively cheap. Works really well; my Molik Karn mini looks great after a good application.

Let me clarify, Peter. I originally used Krylon Crystal Clear and then GW Matte Finish to cancel the shine (A trick I learned from Mike Dougan). It worked great until I ran out of Krylon, and bought something like it. It didn't do the trick, and I thought my Wave Serpent was boned. DJ suggested the Army Painter stuff, so that's my new finisher.

do you absolutely have to use a sealent? you know if you don;t want it to shine! Note, I am painting Warhammer convesion models for an RPG. I though I might add a gloss enamel wash over some of it.

I would always suggest sealing the fig. The oil in skin wears at paint very fast, and on top of that, there is the wear and tear of using the fig.  If you don't particularly care, then don't use it.  But if you want the fig to look nice for years, then sealant is amust.  If you want a glossy look, I would suggest a brush on gloss enamel applied AFTER the sealant to the parts you want to shine.  I know a couple of people who do this with all of the metalics that they use, but since I don't, I don't have a brand to suggest, but I think testors may have something.

If I'm spraying, I use Krylon UV Resistant Gloss followed by Krylon UV Resistant Matte.

If I'm brushing or using my airbrush (which is what I do most of the time now), I use Liquitex Gloss Varnish followed by Lascaux UV Resistant Matte.

Btw, any matte finish can go glossy if applied too thickly or over a wet previous coat.  These days, I let my figures dry 24 hrs (or so) between coats and spray (airbrush or can) with a very light touch.
